Abstract
RSEs frequently help researchers who deal with large amounts of data, yet discussions about how the data should be managed, described, or catalogued are still often ignored. There is a wide range of technical solutions, policies, and best practices that can be used, and these can be slightly overwhelming to explore. In this talk, I’ll briefly explain why it’s important to understand the different types of metadata, before covering the practical ways that RSEs can support researchers, and introduce some of the international standards which are starting to be adopted to help ensure some consistency. I’ll use examples from a number of projects that I’ve been involved in that have supported different domains, and also highlight some of the issues I’ve encountered along the way.
