Abstract
It has been argued that historical writing on American mathematics goes back to at least the late nineteenth century with the publication in 1890 of The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States by emigre Swiss mathematician, Florian Cajori. His book also marked, in a sense, the beginning of the study of the history of American mathematics per se. By tracing the historiography of mathematics in the United States, this talk will make the case that the technical history of mathematics after 1950 represents the major lacuna in the that field.
