Abstract
An exotic sphere is a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic, but not diffeomorphic, to a sphere with its standard smooth structure. There are many exotic spheres, but relatively little is known about their geometry (e.g., smooth transformation groups, curvature). I will describe some recent results detecting smooth rotational symmetries of exotic spheres using stable homotopy theory (joint work with Boris Botvinnik and works in progress with Tilman Bauer and Oliver Wang).
