How disordered is a pile of marbles? Numerical techniques to quantify disorder.

When spheres are poured into a container they tend to form a “randomly close packed” state. The nature of this state as been the subject of much debate. Recently developed computational techniques offer the possibility to quantify the configurational entropy of such granular packings.
