Abstract
The Drosophila blastoderm is probably the best understood model patterning system in developmental biology, owing to its relative simplicity, experimental tractability, and half a century of intensive research. However, 21st century advances in imaging and other areas have raised as many questions as they’ve answered, making the classic textbook models of Drosophila segmentation seem increasingly incomplete. I will present a whistle-stop tour of ongoing projects in the lab, touching on timer genes, GRN dynamics, reaction-diffusion, protein-protein interactions, “memory” effects, and evolution.
