Excavation support fluids: from failure to fruition
- 👤 Speaker: Prof Stephan Jefferis, Visiting Fellow at the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford
- 📅 Date & Time: Thursday 07 December 2023, 18:00 - 19:00
- 📍 Venue: Room 5 Cripps Court (Magdalene College)
Abstract
A discussion of the behaviour of excavation support fluids in piling, diaphragm walling, horizontal directional drilling and tunnelling with an analysis of the fluid properties that are important for each of these processes. In particular the lessons that can be learned from the evolution of a new class of support fluid –PHPA polymer fluids, which, after early failures, are now widely used especially in piling. The seminar will develop and update some of the themes from the 2022 Rankine lecture.
