Why is there so much political polarization in many advanced democracies? This lecture discusses two mechanisms. On the demand side, voters’ extremism is boosted by the mere salience of group conflict. On the supply side, Twitter messages sent by political leaders become more polarized before and during the elections. Overall, these results suggest that political polarization reflects the interaction of the demand and supply sides of politics, and that elections strengthen the incentives of politicians to polarize their voters.
