Abstract
A database of water and wind mills derived from County mapping provides estimates of power available from โnaturalโ sources across England & Wales ca 1800. A database of stationary steam engines for the same period captures the transition to factory mills. The dramatic increase in urban โmillsโ up to 1850 is followed using detailed maps of Manchester. This is linked to the power and employee numbers for textile mills in the 1838 report by Factory Inspectorate. The impact of the changes on the size and zoning of the urban area are considered and the revolutionary changes of sequential improvements discussed.
