All welcome Antarctica is remote, hostile and uninhabited and hugely important for understanding our planet. For the scientists who work in Antarctica, engineering and technology is essential for addressing scientific challenges, but even living and working safely in Antarctica is demanding upon the people and the engineering and systems that maintain them. This talk will give an overview of the importance of Antarctica and the engineering challenges to those who work there. The design of the new research station Halley VI will be discussed as will autonomous scientific instruments that operate in the vast areas away from the manned research stations.
