Abstract
I argue that post-inflationary primordial mechanisms (e.g. cosmological phase transitions) cannot lead to large scale coherent magnetic fields. I then show that also magnetic fields from inflation are severely constrained since they initiate large fluctuations in the geometry during the transition from inflation to the radiation era.
