The LHC Project - The Higgs Boson and Beyond
- 👤 Speaker: Professor Andy Parker (University of Cambridge)
- 📅 Date & Time: Thursday 23 February 2012, 19:00 - 20:00
- 📍 Venue: Boys Smith Room, Fisher Building, St. John’s College
Abstract
The talk will review the status of the search for the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN . Once the Higgs is discovered, or ruled out, attention will focus on revealing the physics believed to underlie the standard model. Popular theoretical ideas include supersymmetric particles and the existence of extra space dimensions. The talk will discuss some research going on in Cambridge to search for strong gravity effects, such as black holes, predicted in extra-dimensional models.
Prof Andy Parker is the leader of the Cambridge High Energy Physics group, and a member of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN . For 6 years he was the project leader for the ATLAS Inner Detector. His research interests are in experimental searches for new physics phenomena, beyond the current standard model of particles and forces.
