Mathematics and Applications of Branes in String and M-theory

We first review the general features underlying the construction of the 3D New Massive Gravity theory. Next, we show in which sense, at least at the linearized level, this theory can be extended to higher dimensions. An important role is played by exotic representations of massive spin 2. The prospect for interactions is discussed
