“New Insights into the Mechanisms and Selectivity of Protein Degradation by the Proteasome Pathway”

Fred has been fascinated by protein degradation pathways since his first days as a professor at Harvard In the 1970’s. The general opinion at the time was that the cell’s garbage collection was mostly done by the lysosome.

Always pushing at the frontiers of cell biology, Fred discovered the proteasome and then it’s famous inhibitor MG—‐132.

With careful chemical manipulations his group was able to generate the related compound bortezomib that is now a billion dollar drug used for the treatment of a haematological cancer called myeloma.
