Have you ever thought how important is the role of good translation for proper perception of literature? On Wednesday Cambridge University Russian Society isorganizing a talk by Vladimir Sevrinovsky, translator of poetry from Englishinto Russian.
Vladimir is the winner of the international contest of poetry translators “Pushkinin Britain-2011”. He has translated many poems by Shel Silverstein, EdwardThomas, Charles Causley and other authors.
This talk will be about translators’ mistakes – sad and funny, bad and wonderful. Some of them ruined translations, others made them better than originals.You’ll learn how bad knowledge of English helped Pushkin, how Lermontov changed sex of Heine’s character and about eternal struggle between two approaches for translation.
