One fundamental invariant of an elliptic curve E is its Mordell-Weil rank, and there are many open questions and fascinating conjectures surrounding it. I will try to motivate the study of Selmer groups of elliptic curves, as well as talk about why they help us better understand ranks. After that I will discuss some results on the growth of Selmer ranks in certain cyclic extensions of number fields.
