The holographic description of field theories with Lifshitz symmetry is an interesting extension of AdS/CFT, which may have applications to condensed matter theory. By the standard gauge/gravity duality, deforming the boundary conditions in the bulk modifies the dual field theory by adding sources of the appropriate operators. Here we will discuss what are the allowed boundary conditions for scalar fields, and argue that even some normalizable modes can produce severe instabilities.
