There is an urgent and growing need for ‘actionable’ information about the planet; information that governments, policy makers, businesses and citizens can use to make effective decisions about our future. The most valuable form of actionable information is predictions. We outline Microsoft’s research programme developing new science to enable better predictions and provide actionable information about the future of our world, for the world. We present a set of new scientific models, methods and tools we have developed, each of which represents a substantial step forward in terms of the ability to generate useful, defensible, predictive models of key planetary components (e.g., future climate, food, carbon, disease). Combined, they offer a radically new prediction engine for generating and sharing actionable information about the planet.
