“Ecology” is a word that has entered daily usage, and music scholars themselves are using it more and more. Indeed a new area of intellectual endeavor is appearing under the name of “ecomusicology”. That is all well and good. At the same time, it is important for music studies to be fully aware of the cultural and ideological underpinnings of concepts such as “nature” and “ecology,” when we use them to discuss how humans establish a relationship with their living environment through organized sound.
