BIOS :

Gavin Bierman is a senior researcher at Microsoft Research. He has worked on programming language type systems and semantics, query languages, verification, dynamic updating and a variety of other topics. At Microsoft he has worked with the C#, TypeScript and SQL product teams. Before joining Microsoft, he was a lecturer at the Computer Laboratory, where was variously a PhD student, research fellow, and postdoc.

Jon Crowcroft has been the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems in the Computer Laboratory since October 2001. He has worked in the area of Internet support for multimedia communications for over 30 years. Three main topics of interest have been scalable multicast routing, practical approaches to traffic management, and the design of deployable end-to-end protocols. Current active research areas are Opportunistic Communications, Social Networks, and techniques and algorithms to scale infrastructure-free mobile systems. He leans towards a “build and learn” paradigm for research.

He graduated in Physics from Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 1979, gained an MSc in Computing in 1981 and PhD in 1993, both from UCL . He is a Fellow the Royal Society, a Fellow of the ACM , a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the IET and the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE .

He likes teaching, and has published a few books based on learning materials.

Anil Madhavapeddy is a Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge, based in the Systems Research Group in the Computer Laboratory. He was on the original team that developed the Xen hypervisor, and helped develop an industry-leading cloud toolstack. This XenServer product has been deployed on millions of hosts and drives critical infrastructure for Fortune 500 companies.

Anil had a diverse background in industry at NetApp, NASA and Internet Vision prior to obtaining his PhD in 2006 from Cambridge. He is an active member of the open-source development community with the OpenBSD operating system, steers the Commercial Uses of Functional Programming workshop, and serves on the boards of startup companies. He recently published Real World OCaml with O’Reilly, and currently directs the OCaml Labs group within the Computer Laboratory to unlock the practical benefits of functional programming in the construction of complex computer systems.

David Reid worked, before university, in a research lab at Shell Global Solutions, under the Year in Industry scheme. He read Computer Science in Cambridge 2008-2011, and did an internship with Disney’s Black Rock Studio before his third year. After leaving university, he spent a while tutoring secondary school students in maths and physics and started working towards an Open University maths degree. He joined Metaswitch Networks in early 2013, taking on the role of a software engineer for the company’s Universal Media Gateway product. I says it is too early in his career to know exactly where it’ll progress, but Metaswitch is large enough to have plenty of opportunities within it and the flexibility to accommodate employees ambitions.
