Computational Design Tools for Fabrication-aware Modeling

Abstract
Creating non-trivial geometric forms is difficult. The problem is further complicated when the target form is to be physically fabricated. In absence of appropriate tools, designers often spend long hours accounting for a variety of physical and functional constraints, which are often complex and difficult to manually account for. Our research focuses on developing algorithms that characterise, parameterize and expose ‘valid’ shape spaces implicitly defined by such constraints. In this talk, I will discuss our latest attempts to analyze large model collection to discover such shape spaces and use them to develop intuitive computational tools to facilitate creation of semantically meaningful yet easy-to-fabricate shapes (e.g., developable shapes, RF structures, etc.).
