One of the simplest requirements we can ask of a category is that it be ‘locally small’. But what if we want more structure on the hom-sets? For instance, in the category of abelian groups the hom-sets also have an abelian group structure. The abstract development of these notions leads to the concept of enrichment, and monoidal categories provide the most basic scenario.
