Part of the TMS Symposium

I’ll try and argue that much of our current understanding of the universe – from its origins to its most fundamental components – rests crucially on the framework of quantum field theories. After a general overview, time permitting, I’ll talk about the much dreaded concept of renormalization, the difficulty of introducing mass and the celebrated Higgs mechanism.
