We consider the non-reactive fully elastic Boltzmann equation for mixtures in the diffusive scaling and we discuss some aspects of the Hilbert expansion method applied to this problem. In particular, we study the compactness properties of the linearized Boltzmann operator. Since the classical techniques introduced by Grad are not enough in this context, we propose a new method to treat the terms involving particles with different masses.
