SciSoc Talk: Dr Philipp Holliger
- đ¤ Speaker: Dr Philipp Holliger
- đ Date & Time: Tuesday 01 March 2016, 20:00 - 21:30
- đ Venue: LT1, Department of Engineering
Abstract
In our final exciting talk of term, we will be welcoming Dr Philipp Holliger to be speaking about synthesising biochemical life.
Dr Holliger is based here in Cambridge in the MRC Lab of Molecular Biology, investigating critical molecular events in the origin of life.
Currently he is exploring the evolution of novel polymerases, with the aim to generate artificial genetic systems, and synthesise novel, DNA -like polymers for applications in nanotechnology and material science. They are also endeavouring to recreate a modern equivalent of the primordial RNA replicase by exploiting compartmentalization for the evolution of ribozymes capable of replicating their own encoding sequence.
The talk is free to members, ÂŖ2 for non-members, and, of course, will be followed by a cheese and wine reception. Life membership will be available to buy for ÂŖ15.
Details: 8pm on Tuesday 1st March in the department of Engineering LT1
