Abstract
In this talk I will discuss user interface optimisation from two perspectives: 1) ensuring we are optimising a user interface in such a way that users perceive the performance benefit; and 2) ensuring we are approaching the design objectives correctly when optimising for performance. I will illustrate this discussion with two examples. First I will present a recent model we have developed which predicts whether users can detect performance differences in user interface designs. Thereafter I will discuss a design for entering text at on a smart watch at over 40 words-per-minute on average using a regular touchscreen QWERTY keyboard.
