The definition of data science and the work of data scientists are fodder for bloggers the world over, lost in the puff and chatter are serious questions as to why this category of work has suddenly become differentiated and so significant. Dr Thompson will show some of the drivers are that have precipitated the invention of the idea of data science and data scientists, and some projects undertaken at BT in recent years that help highlight these drivers. He will then describe what he thinks is a better and more useful response to the situation that we find ourselves in which is the development of a science of data, and describe some tools developed at BT around this idea.
