Abstract
I shall aim to highlight some of the peculiarities and many of the difficulties in working with grains in the form of a fairly general overview. Following this, we will examine a model proposed by Jop et al. (Nature 441 (2006) 727-730), and some of my own efforts in applying it to simple geometries.
