DESCRIPTION:The recent detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from the LI
GO-Virgo Collaboration have kicked off an exciting new era in gravitationa
l physics\, astrophysics and cosmology. This would not have been possible
if our laser-interferometric GW detectors had not reached a sensitivity go
od enough to measure length deformations at the astonishing accuracy of on
e part in 10^{21}. Having access to this precious data only gets us half o
f the way to extracting quantitative scientific results from it. In this t
alk I will briefly discuss the principles of gravitational wave detection
and will demonstrate some of the statistical methods used in GW data analy
sis\, for the detection of signals and the inference on the properties of
 their source.
