DESCRIPTION:We welcome everyone to join us for this important intervention
  into debates over decolonising African Studies in the UK\, in South Afric
 a\, and globally. This public lecture will engage the intellectual history
  and legacy of Archie Mafeje\, a key figure in the struggles to transform
 knowledge production on Africa\, who earned his PhD in anthropology at Cam
 bridge in 1966. In 1968\, Archie Mafeje was appointed Senior Lecturer at U
 CT\, only to have the appointment reversed under pressure from the aparthe
 id state\, sparking student protests. He then taught at University of Dar
 es Salaam\, ISS in The Hague\, American University in Cairo\, University o
 f Namibia\, and University of South Africa. In 2015\, the Archie Mafeje ro
 om at UCT was occupied by students during the Rhodes Must Fall protests\;
 in the words of the student occupiers\, "We have chosen the Archie Mafeje
 boardroom to recognise his struggle against the very institutional racism
 we are fighting against." \n\nThe lecture will be followed by a drinks rec
 eption in the Atrium of the Law Faculty.
