DESCRIPTION:We will be discussing:\nJeannette M. Wing (2006). 'Computation
al Thinking'. Communications of the ACM\, 49(3)\, 33-35.\n\nAlthough not a
publication specifically written for an HCI audience\, this short article
raises many issues on which HCI folk might have a view.\n\nAvailable onli
 ne at:\nhttp://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/wing/www/publications/Wing06.pdf\
n\nOriginal conclusion:\nProfessors of computer science should teach a\nco
urse called “Ways to Think Like a Computer Scientist” to college fresh
men\, making it available to\nnon-majors\, not just to computer science ma
jors. We\nshould expose pre-college students to computational\nmethods and
models. Rather than bemoan the\ndecline of interest in computer science o
r the decline\nin funding for research in computer science\, we\nshould lo
ok to inspire the public’s interest in the\nintellectual adventure of th
 e field. We’ll thus spread\nthe joy\, awe\, and power of computer scienc
 e\, aiming\nto make computational thinking commonplace.\nIt represents a u
niversally applicable attitude and skill set everyone\, not just computer
scientists\, would be eager to learn and use.\n\nRubric for the reading gr
oup: Everyone attending is expected to read the paper in advance. Please b
ring a copy with you\, preferably annotated with interesting reflections.
The format of discussion will be a brief invited introduction/critique by
two members of the group\, followed by general discussion and informal mix
 ing.
