DESCRIPTION:The dynamical behaviour of atoms and molecules adsorbed on sol
id surfaces is a rich topic relevant to a wide range of chemical and physi
cal applications. Adsorbate motion can be characterized in great detail us
ing helium atom scattering methods\, which are sensitive to dynamics at su
b-nano length scales and time scales simultaneously. Analytical results fo
r dynamical correlation functions in model systems are critical for interp
reting scattering experiments. I will discuss established methods and resu
lts for the intermediate scattering function\, and extensions to treat qua
ntum Brownian dynamics\, coherent band transport\, and coupled vibrations
and hops in a periodic potential.
