DESCRIPTION:We live on a big old rock\, we build on it\, dig up minerals f
rom it and tap into it for energy supplies. Each of these engineering acti
vities face challenges related to understanding aspects of how rocks\, soi
ls and geological systems behave. Determining stress conditions and respon
ses to loadings of various types is one of these challenges. A few example
s of how modelling has been employed to gain a\nclearer view of expected c
onditions and behaviours will be discussed. Applications range in scale fr
om many miles to fractions of a millimetre and in time from hundreds of \n
millions of years to a few minutes or seconds.
