DESCRIPTION:The immobilisation of high level waste from nuclear fuel repro
cessing by vitrification in borosilicates is a well-established technology
\, however there are a variety of legacy wastes at sites such as Sellafiel
d that cannot be immobilised in the existing glass compositions. In addit
ion vitrification is being increasingly looked at for the vitrification of
toxic and hazardous wastes. I will review some of our work in this area a
nd will draw out lessons both for the vitrification of “difficult” ele
ments and for the wider application of waste vitrification.
