DESCRIPTION:Biography\n\nLeon van Paassen is Associate Professor at Arizon
a State University (ASU) and Senior Investigator at the NSF Engineering Re
search Centre for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG). He rec
eived an MSc in Applied Earth Sciences in 2002 from Delft University of Te
chnology with a specialisation in Engineering Geology. During and after hi
s graduation he worked several years as a geotechnical engineering consult
ant at IFCO Foundation Expertise and at research institute Deltares. In 20
09 he obtained his PhD in Applied Sciences at the Department of Biotechnol
ogy of Delft University of Technology. His thesis on Biogrout: Microbially
induced carbonate precipitation as ground improvement method resulted in
several publications\, patents and was awarded with several national and i
nternational awards. In his research he integrates the fields of environme
ntal biotechnology and geotechnical engineering\, aiming to develop sustai
nable solutions\, which improve resource efficiency and reduce the environ
mental impact of civil and mining engineering industry.\n\nThe talk will b
e followed by a dinner in a nearby pub. To get an idea of numbers\, it wou
ld be very much appreciated if you send a confirmation email to ac989@cam.
