DESCRIPTION:I will outline a new framework based on tropical g
eometry to study genus one\ncurve singularities an
d discuss its relationship with the geometry of mo
duli\nspaces. I will focus on the application of t
his framework to construct new\nnonsingular compac
t moduli spaces parameterizing elliptic curves in
projective\nspace. This also reveals a modular int
erpretation for Vakil and Zinger’s\nfamously diffi
cult desingularization of the space of elliptic cu
rves in\nprojective space\, as well as a short and
conceptual proof of that result. The\nframework a
lso gives rise to new insights into the Hassett—Ke
el program for\nspaces of elliptic curves. This is
based on joint work with Keli Santos-Parker\nand
Jonathan Wise.
