SUMMARY:The Search for Supermassive Black Holes in the Era of Big Sky Surv

DESCRIPTION:Astronomy is experiencing a golden-age of data gathering. Powe
rful digital cameras and sensitive spectrographs mounted on some of the wo
rld’s largest telescopes\, are now enabling us to map hundreds of millio
ns of astronomical sources all the way from the local to the very early Un
iverse. Big surveys also open up discovery space for us to identify some o
f the rarest and most exotic objects that populate our Universe. I will de
scribe how some of the current big sky surveys are changing the face of ob
servational astronomy\, discuss some of my own research into the hunt for
rare accreting supermassive black holes using these big surveys\, and conc
lude with some future prospects on new telescopes and facilities that are
set to revolutionise the field.\n\n\nTickets are £2 or free for members.
Annual membership (£7) and life membership (£12) can also be purchased a
t the event - please bring cash.\n\nThe talk will be followed by refreshme
nts outside the lecture theatre.\n\nThe talk will be at the usual location
of Wolfson lecture theatre in the Department of Chemistry. The entrance i
s the opposite side of the building to Bristol-Myers-Squibb Lecture theatr
e and is opposite the car park- shown by the red arrow on the map. "https:
