DESCRIPTION:Although relatively small in their physical dimensions\, initi
 ators play a fundamental role in the safety\, reliability and performance 
 of all explosive systems. Several current initiation systems are introduce
 d and future military requirements are discussed. Exploding foil initiator
 s are currently the prime candidate for in-line initiator applications\, w
 hile laser-driven flyers could extend this technology. The investigation o
 f several novel high explosive materials for use in these systems will the
 n be presented.
