DESCRIPTION:There have recently been claims in the scientific literature f
or human like cognitive abilities in dogs. For example the acquisition of
object label names through a process known as fast mapping (see <http://
 news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3794079.stm>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/
science/nature/3794079.stm). However simpler cognitive processes may also
explain this process . In this presentation we consider the different expl
anations and available experimental evidence\, in relation to the acquisi
tion of object label names by dogs and the implication for animal cognitio
 n research.
