DESCRIPTION:My main aim in this talk is to introduce some notions on\nhow
results from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry can be\nused in an
alysis of statistical models\, in particular\, maximum entropy\nmodels. Fi
rst\, I will give a brief introduction of Grobner bases and\nits applicati
ons to algebraic geometry. I will show that maximum\nentropy models can be
described with toric ideals by embedding them in\nalgebraic varieties (by
means of the Zariski closure). Based on these ideas\,\nI will present som
e algebraic methods for estimation of these models along\n with some appli
cations. Finally\, I will discuss some ideas and problems on\n certain alg
ebraic quantities serving as complexity measures for these\nmodels.\n
