DESCRIPTION:Many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease
or Parkinson’s disease are associated with the gradual accumulation and
characteristic spreading of pathological proteins. Mechanisms underlying t
he prion-like propagation of protein aggregates remain\, however\, largely
elusive. I will present our ongoing work using the nematode Caenorhabditi
s elegans as a model system to discover and examine cellular pathways and
factors that influence the propagation and intercellular spreading of dise
 ase-associated proteins (e.g.\, α-Synuclein) in metazoans. A better under
standing of these mechanisms might eventually identify new druggable targe
ts for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
