DESCRIPTION:The Edinburgh St James development is a mixed-use development 
 with 850\,000 sq ft. of retail space\, 150 residential units\, hotel\, lei
 sure\nand car parking facilities scheduled for completion in 2020. Constru
 ction of the centre’s 20\,000 sq. m three-storey basement car park has b
 een one of the most demanding aspects of the project. This talk will discu
 ss the geotechnical challenges encountered which have led to a number of u
 nusual and interesting ground retention solutions to provide support to\np
 erimeter walls up to 22m deep.
