DESCRIPTION:The Snowden revelations in 2013 shook up the cryptographic com
munity when documents showed evidence of actions to subvert standards and
restrict "indigenous cryptography". This talk will shine a light on the hi
story of the most famous standardized back door\, the Dual-EC pseudo-rando
m number generator\, and how it came into being a standard. Dual-EC is als
o a textbook example\, though not the only one\, of how back doors go bad.
The talk will also cover some lesser known issues with standards and tha
t it is sometimes hard to distinguish sabotage from bad\, but benign\, cry
 ptographic designs.
