DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Migration Society is pleased to present the East
er 2019 Graduate Migration Research Seminar Series. \n\nSeminar II: Art\,
Translanguage\, and Gendered Learnings in Pedagogical Setting: A New Appro
ach to Learn 'with' Migrant Women in London\nSpeaker: Rabia Nasimi\, PhD c
 andidate\, Sociology\, University of Cambridge\nDiscussant: TBA\nLocation:
Alison Richard Building Room 119\n\nAbstract:\nThis presentation is based
on our observations and the reflective notes that we took after a series
of art workshops that we organised for a group of Afghan\, Syrian\, Ukrani
an and Iraqi women in an NGO in West London. These workshops were taking p
lace on Saturdays after the women participate in English classes. We used
different methods of in arts and communication in this multi-lingual envir
onment to create learning from various perspectives. For us\, as a group o
f community activists and academics\, this was a valuable experience in le
arning firstly to work together but also to understand what collaborative
ethnography means. These multi-cultural and multi lingual sessions not onl
y brought a new dimension (combination of art\, mothering\, narrative and
eating) but also facilitated the various ways of meaning making and learni
ng\, what we call ‘translanguage’. We argue that the notion of integra
tion through learning ‘a language’ is not as important is it is portra
yed in policy and media. There are other less developed dimensions of lear
ning that if facilitated\, can improve the sense of self\, integration and
communication and visual skills.\n\nAbout Rabia:\nRabia Nasimi is a PhD C
andidate in Sociology. She graduated from the LSE in 2016 with an MSc in S
ociology (Research). Her undergraduate degree was in Sociology and Politic
s from the University of Goldsmiths in 2015 where she received a first for
her dissertation. Whilst studying she has been extensively involved in ru
nning the ACAA (Afghanistan and Central Asian Association)\, a charity tha
t was founded by her father Dr. Nooralhaq Nasimi in 2001 to support refuge
e integration in the UK. As part of her work at the ACAA she has worked on
a diaspora-led development programme in Afghanistan as well as supporting
women and families who are refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Her wor
k at the organisation has also meant she has developed strong monitoring a
nd evaluation skills as well as project management.\n\n--\nThe GMRSS offer
s PhD\, MPhil\, and Masters students currently engaged in research on migr
ation an opportunity to present their work\, get feedback and meet other g
raduate colleagues working on similar issues. Presenters are from various
 fields\, disciplines\, and universities\, and similarly\, and we welcome a
 ttendees from across the University.
