DESCRIPTION:As living organisms\, bacteria exhibit motility induced phase
separation as well as population dynamics. A minimal stochastic model is c
onstructed to investigate the phenomenologies and the entropy production r
ate of such systems. Two distinct solutions are found: phase separation ar
rested at a fixed length scale and limit cycles where the bacteria alterna
te between the free-swimming planktonic phase and the “colony” phase.
Building on the deterministic solutions\, the entropy production rate can
be calculated to low orders in noise\, as a way of quantifying the amount
of time reversal symmetry breaking in the system.
