DESCRIPTION:Quasicrystals are intermetallic alloys which have long-range o
rder without periodicity and hence display unusual rotational symmetries.
In this talk I will discuss their surfaces as templates for building nove
l nanostructures and thin films and the role they can play in exploring t
he physical consequences of aperiodicity. I will also describe an ongoing
debate on the stability of clusters in these materials as revealed in frac
 ture studies and crack-propagation modelling.
