DESCRIPTION:The rare earth silicides offer potential advantages and novel
structures over that of transition metal silicides at the interface with s
ilicon. Several different structures of silicon-rich rare earth silicides
are formed on single crystal silicon surfaces: on Si(100)\, nanowires and
nanoislands\nare formed\, while on Si(111)\, 2D silicides can be created.
In this talk I will present and contrast detailed analysis of the structur
es of a number of rare earth silicides\, on both Si(100) and Si(111)\, car
ried out using quantitative medium-energy ion scattering and scanning tunn
 elling microscopy.
