SUMMARY:Freezing of cluster solids and the Gibbs phase rule - Prof. Daan F

DESCRIPTION:Gibbs has said it all: "Two phases are in equilibrium if their
\ntemperatures and pressures are equal\, as well as the chemical potential
s\nof the constituent components". Numerical simulations to predict phase\
ndiagrams are based on this starting point and all went well...until\nclus
ter solids appeared on the scene.\n\nIn my talk I will explain what cluste
r solids are and I will discuss\ncalculations by Bianca Mladek and Patrick
Charbonneau that illustrate\nthat the phase behaviour of these materials
appeared to violate the\nphase rule of Gibbs. It all ends well: Gibbs is r
ight\, as usual - and we\nhave learned something about crystalline solids.
