DESCRIPTION:How do we think\, and how do we feel about risk? We are faced
with claims of both a reproducibility crisis in scientific publication\, a
nd of a ‘post-truth’ society\, in which emotional responses dominate o
ver balanced consideration of evidence. This presents a strong challenge
to those who value quantitative and scientific evidence: how can we commun
icate risks and unavoidable scientific uncertainty in a transparent and tr
ustworthy way? In this talk\, Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter discusses
the alternative verbal\, numerical and graphical means of communicating un
certainty. Professor Spiegelhalter is a distinguished statistician and a b
orn communicator\, as seen in the BBC’s _Tails You Win: The Science of C
hance_. He is currently the President of the Royal Statistical Society\, a
nd the Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk in the Statist
ical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge.
