DESCRIPTION:Structures are a key part of many engineered products from bri
dges to buildings to a wide range of mechanical devices. All structures a
re designed to fulfil a function and as well as understanding the behaviou
r of structures Structural engineers need to understand the functions for
which the structure is being designed. As highlighted by Allan Mann in hi
s recent paper in the ICE proceedings interfaces especially with mechanica
l systems are a frequent source of problems in construction. Assuming tha
t the engineers working on the other components are going to come up with
the right design is very risky.\n\nThe drive now from the Royal Academy of
Engineering is for Integrated System Designers. This is of course much t
he same as understanding the functions but if necessary taking the lead in
the overall design of the product. Ian liddell will present this argume
nt with a few examples of where interface problems have occurred with a vi
ew to stimulating a discussion as to how it might impact engineering cours
 es.\n
