DESCRIPTION:Paul Shellard is Professor of Cosmology at the Department of A
pplied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) in the University of Ca
mbridge. After completing his PhD in DAMTP\, he held research fellowships
at Trinity College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, before
taking up a faculty position in Cambridge. Paul’s research endeavours to
advance the confrontation between mathematical theories of the early univ
erse and observational cosmology. His current interests focus on the prope
rties of the cosmic microwave background – the relic radiation left over
from the Big Bang - and on primordial gravitational waves. He is also Di
rector of the Stephen Hawking Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in DAMTP. P
